4Futures !?

This pages announces a website about enabling and empowerment across means and ends, scales, proportions, and consequences, languages, cultures and mindsets. What for? Positive, shared Futures. Stay tuned !!

There was lots of discussion about Futures in 2019. We as Makers4Humanity and Youth4Planet have been looking the years before into Alternative and Positive Futures. With the plural „s“ as Futures Studies look into many alternative Futures we have to design to create and make a difference ! As Humans, model making „makers“, who share and gift and leave the short-term and ego behind.

On the occasion of the Entrepreneurship Summit 2019 we continued our „experiments“ of the last 10 years to bring together a broad variety of Makers, Entrepreneurs, Activists and Observers to increase the variety of options and alternatives and learn from each other and expand the reach of positive examples ! Check the Programme: and the Footnote below about future(s) with „s“ and so creating: Alternative Pluralistic Positive Anticipated and Desired Futures.

Of particular concern is the usage and meaning of the term „Entrepreneurship“, its reach, impact and reception in different fields and cultures. Is the Entrepreneur only a Maker!? Or is he also concerned about the impact, scales, proportions, consequences, the cultures and societies involved and/or excluded?

This excursions seem to be needed here: Are we focussing on planning processes, products, houses, infrastructures, settlements?, aware of the Whole or the Globe or GAIA? Is the Sciences of Human Settlements / Ekistics (40ies) (Doxiadis) still part of the curriculum?
Has anyone read Ernest Callenbach and his Ecotopia from the mid 70ies? Modern Science seems to be focusing on details, processes and structures; ignoring infrastructures and superstructures. So we mean here systems aware of wholes and holism. But not the „flatland“ holisms we are confronted with today. I recommend the
Wholeness Seminar and some ISSS papers from the 90ies and the International Encyclopedia of Systems and Cybernetics (IESC) and this entries.

Observing the widening of application and use of the term Entrepreneurship, the surfacing of new terms, the development of social, cultural, cultural, civic, … entrepreneurship, the organizers feel there is a need to make concrete and outline what Entrepreneurs do and why! - with which means and towards which ends? Do they serve individual or societies needs and purposes, or are they stuck on the level of making profits for narrow and short-term aims? Proposed is to look into more recent „terms“ like: „Systems“ and „Globe“ Entrepreneurship.

See the Pre-Summit programme and what is the outline and scope. One central and organizing introductionary segment of the programme was the „View of the Whole“ section.

The granularity and pragmaticality of „wholes“. Are they simple, coherent, complete? Are they leading to insights and practical solutions? Plans that can be implemented and changed?

The session was about how such „wholes“ are communicated across scales, and media, but also how and with which means on which level, in which sector! How Systems and Models can and need to be employed together and alternatively! And are this approaches combined with Maps, Images, Schemas, Network-representations, Signs and Multi-media, multi-modal representations? (The outcome is seen in „and-or“ multi-modal combinations, and/or and in combination of work on different levels, sectors, scales, cultures.

Additional to such macroscopic „general orientation and considerations“ approaches across scales there is a need for concrete and more „down-to-Earth“ systemic application, like the viable dynamic systems and simulations/games work of Frederic Vester and his Ökolopoly – Ecopolicy®. The outcomes and ongoing work after the Pre-Summit will be documented (coming soon) on another website: https://4futures.net (stay tuned and check Gabriele Harrer, founder of System Logics Think Tank in St.Gallen Gabriele.Harrer@system-logics.com

Footnote about future(s) - with „s“ and creating Alternative Pluralistic Positive Anticipated and Desired Futures.

In times of Fridays4Future, Educators, Filmmakers, Scientists, Parents,…. 4 Future, it seemed obvious and indicated to bring diversity to the table, learn about methods, means, systems, tools, models,… often in different languages and with different objectives, intensions, mindsets,…. It short: recognize that there is not only one, THE future. Celebrate the chance and beauty of the many alternative, designed futures, we can create and select from like from a Menue, we also consciously have to design and support every day anew. Gestaltung in German is much more than Design. Just check these Gestaltungs/Futures Design Competences, an early article by Gerhard de Haan, and how the specific competence and skills needs are laid out recently by Felix Rauner in the field of vocational training linking to creativity.

Pleasen note: With the 1. World Futures Conference/Mankind 2000 founded in Oslo in 1967, World Futures Studies were conceived in 1972, the Federation (WFSF) was founded in Paris1973. Johan Galtung told the story of how the „s“ for the plural was conceived, turned town, re-established with emphasis on Alternative Futures. Check for more: Futures History.

Only now in Germany - last year (2019) with the FUTURIUM in Berlin, start German Futurists in the mainstream start considering this FUTURES plurality of creating, selecting, living pluralistic co-created Alternative Futures, even when the plural in German – Zukünfte - is well established.
